Endosteal Dental Implants

Sinus bone grafting and elevation involves adding bone into the space created in the sinus cavity thereby  increasing the bone volume in this region to support dental implant placement (see above).

All-on-X

All-on-X is an alternative to placing a top and/or bottom set of replacement teeth, called a full arch or full mouth dental implant denture. Usually four to six dental implants are placed in available bone, sometimes without the need for bone grafting. Special abutments are used so that a temporary set of replacement teeth can be placed the same day or a few days later. You follow a modified diet while the gum tissues heal and the implants bond with your natural bone. After about six months, the permanent replacement teeth will be placed, and you can resume a regular diet.

Subperiosteal (under the gums)

Subperiosteal dental implants are a metal framework placed under the gum, fitted to the jawbone. This type of framework implant has been used in the past in patients who do not have enough healthy natural jawbone and cannot, or do not want to, undergo a bone augmentation procedure to rebuild it. Subperiosteal dental implants were originally placed because endosteal dental implants were not yet available in this country. Unfortunately, subperiosteal dental implants generally have a short lifespan and frequently fail due to exposure and infection.

When the back teeth in the upper jaw are missing, the sinus cavity above toothless jawbone can collapse resulting in loss of natural bone. In a sinus bone graft procedure (or sinus augmentation), the sinus is accessed from the side and then lifted to its proper position filling the created space with bone graft material to promote bone growth inside the sinus cavity.

CBCT-Rendered Dental Implant Positioning Guide

Immediate Load Dental Implants

Also called “Same Day Implants” or “Teeth in a Day,” immediate load dental implants allow placement of a temporary tooth or temporary implant-supported denture during the same appointment as your dental implant placement. This may be an option if you have enough natural bone and a dental implant secure enough to support immediate placement and load and the bite does not cause too much pressure on the new temporary tooth or dental implant denture appliance.

This involves restoring or regenerating bone in your jaw when it is lost and insufficient to support dental implantation. Scientific research shows that using bone graft additives and growth factors to fortify the bone, in conjunction with bone graft coverage using a collagen membrane, generally achieves the best predictable results. After a healing period of 6 months, the bone deformity is repaired by the guided bone graft regeneration permitting the subsequent placement of dental implants into the newly created bone.

If your jaw isn’t wide enough to support dental implants, bone graft material can be added to a small or narrow ridge using the guided bone regeneration method described above. Bone graft ridge augmentation develops sufficient width and/or height of your jawbone to support a dental implant. Once the graft is mature (6 months), dental implants can be placed, and teeth restored (see below).

Mini Dental Implants are narrow toothpick-sized dental implants which are narrower and weaker than most commonly used endosteal dental implants. They are placed through less-invasive techniques and are used primarily to stabilize a lower denture or bridge. Mini Dental Implants have a short lifespan as they tend to fail quickly (within a few months to a few years) due to adverse bite loading and infection. The Mini Dental Implants are just too narrow and weak in structure to support the normal bite forces placed on a denture or bridge.

Although Mini Dental Implants are promoted as a cheaper alternative to endosteal dental implants, your investment in them is short-lived and lost due to the high level of Mini Dental Implant failure, fracture and patient frustration.
